Never heard of rebuilding an expansion valve but, maybe?
We get into sourcing strange parts a lot. When an application won't work we
start with part numbers on the item and then dimensions, features and
function. Maybe even an obsolete OE number from a cooperative dealer parts
person if we are lucky. None of this has worked however, in finding a new
condenser for my '70 Dodge pickup but an expansion valve should be a lot
easier.
For an expansion valve, it should be for R-12 refrigerant and have the in
and out fittings oriented properly. Thread sizes and types of connections
etc are also important.
Some have balance tubes of varying length and too long can be accomodated
where too short can't. Wrong fitting size will not work. Same for cap tubes.
All will have cap tubes except there will not be fittings.
Super heat spec will come up but most anything will be OK. Real nice to stay
at or above original spec if you can find it.
We would check with 4-Seasons and NAPA Temp cross references with the part
number on the valve to get started but there are a number of sources
including the folks who work with antique retrofit A/C systems so something
will be available but you will most very likely not be able to applicate the
item. I have a 1986 Murray catalog that shows a part number for a 1964
Chrysler but that is as far back as I go.
Good luck.
