My 2 cents on the speedo lube. There is a product on the market made by Wynn
Oil Co. called "viscotene". It is a spray lube that actually comes out
liquid and sets up like a grease. Stays very slippery and is good to 40
below zero. You can spray it into one end and let is run down the cable and
set up on the way. Like I said--only my 2 cents on this. And Charlie--if you
need some let me know. I'm, a Wynn's distributor and it works wonderson many
lubrication needs.  Larry Meixner.

Great advice on disconnecting battery when changing speedo cables!  I also
made the same boo-boo, with same electrifying results!
 
Also agree on your description of speedo lube - definitely not liquidy, and
would not run down the cable by gravity
