[Chrysler300] Mystery Substance

Hi all,
I've been away from the group for a while and I figured I would 
reintroduce myself with a question. I just polished up my stainless 
roof rails and I was getting ready to reinstall them on my 62. My 
question is does anybody know what was originally in between them and 
the car? It looks like a flexible semi sticky substance. I have a 
couple of guesses as to what I could use. I thought the stuff either 
looked like plumber's putty or window glazing. If I had more time this 
evening I probably would have just installed them using plumber's 
putty, but seeing as I had to stop for the evening I thought I would 
put the question out there.
