If the drums are hitting the backing plates, sounds
like the end play isn't set right on the axle bearings
(the ones on the axle shafts out by the wheels - not
the differential.)  If this has developed over time,
the axle bearings could be worn.  Not a big deal. 
Either way, you'll have to reset the end play with
shims.  See Group 3 page 7 of your 1960 shop manual. 
Seemed kind of counter-intuitive to me at first, but
it worked and it's not rocket science.
