Fwd: [Chrysler300] Trailer Tires

I have an 18' trailer with dual 3500 pound axles. It came new with conventional car tires rated for 1250 pounds each. My understanding is that many trailer manufacturers use such tires. However, given that the trailer weighs about 1700 pounds, that means that a net load of 3800 pounds puts the four tires at rated capacity of 5000 pounds! Our letter cars weigh somewhat over 4000 pounds and an Imperial is closer to 5000 pounds. Thus, hauling one of these cars on the original tires means that you are overloading the tires above their rated capacity.

I have been using Carlisle trailer tires which are available from Discount Tire, and I think Wal-Mart (although they are not always in stock, but they can order them if you have the time to wait). The last one that I bought at Discount Tire was around $80. Wal-Mart is around $55. These tires hold 50 psi of pressure compared to 35 psi for normal car tires. They also have a higher load rating of something like 1800 pounds. They do seem to wear out sooner than expected, especially since the trailer is empty half the time. But, I have not had any tread separation and catastrophic failure is rare.

  With best regards,

  Jim
