[Chrysler300] 1964 Questions

Hi 300K experts -

I've got two questions regarding my 1964 300K and Newport, both convertibles.

  1) Description: I ordered a convertible top well from Fryers Auto Upholstery, who got it from another vendor. It has ONE round hole, about 2" diameter, cut in the center to act as a drain. Both my '64 convertibles have TWO drains, each on approximately one-third in from the side of the car as installed. There is a perforated metal button that each connect to a hose from the underside.
Question: Which is correct, one large center hole (for which I have no hardware) or the two holes? Oddly enough, the Newport has a hole in the upper trunk floor that matches up with the Fryer's top well hole, but has the two drains with hoses as described. The round hole in the sheetmetal is taped over, and the tape has been there for many years. The K does not have this center hole.

  2) Description: A starting problem - when I turn the key, the starter relay clicks, the starter solenoid also clicks, but the starter will turn only one out of ten times or less. Even when the starter is turning, the starter turn the engine over a few revolutions, and will suddenly stop. As a check, I will turn on the headlights or honk the horn - both intense & working well.

I can occasionally get the car to start by using a long screwdriver with an insulated handle and making the power connection at the starter itself, but this is also hit & miss. I switched batteries, replaced the clamps at the battery, changed out the starter with another that I had tested OK at a shop, cleaned small amounts of oil & dirt from the starter mounting area and all electrical connections.

The only thing I haven't done is to change the cables from the battery to the relay and relay to the starter. I did not do this first, as I tried to wiggle these cables back & forth with no change in operation.

Question: Do I just change out the cable, or could it be another problem? What are your opinions on the Western club's repro cable sets?

  Thanks
