[Chrysler300] Movie Car

Back in the early1980s I had the opportunity to use my 300E in a documentary
being filmed by the local outlet of a major network in Chicago. Cars used
were 1950 to 1960 models. The premise was to show how this particular stretch
of expressway, which was opened in 1960 had become grossly overcrowded by the
late 1970s.
Upon command, officers from the Chicago Police Department, Illinois State
Police and Illinois Dept of Transportation would swoop down on that 3 mile
section of road and close off all 8 lanes of north and south bound traffic and
shut all entrance ramps. In a couple of minutes, this once crazy piece of road
was devoid of cars. This caused major traffic problems just west of the
downtown area.
Upon another command, our old cars drove down a cleared entrance ramp on to
the highway in a widely scattered pattern to show what the road looked like
when it opened. Our drive was filmed by a crew stationed on an overpass.
We got off the road on an exit ramp, looped over the highway, down an
entrance ramp and headed down the road in the opposite direction to again be
filmed by the crew on the overpass. We exited the road and returned to our
original staging area. Once we were back in place, all traffic control was released
and the normal mayhem resumed. This was repeated for 3 cycles over the
course of about 5 hours. A lot of planning must have gone into this.
About a month later I saw my 300E on the TV as part of the traffic flow from
the staged 1960 event. As luck would have it, my car and the 1960 Pontiac
driving next to me were in a newspaper piece advertising the upcoming TV
special about the expressways. All was in black and white.
For my time I was paid $75 and fed lunch. All drivers were in complete
control of their cars but had to pay strict attention to their spacing on the road
and were asked not to wave at the camera crew as you went below the overpass.
All in all it was a fun experience.
