[Chrysler300] Insurance question relating to letter cars

Merry Christmas club!
Insurance question for any of the long-time members or anyone who might have
known an insurance person selling car insurance in the 1960's:
When did the insurance companies start to charge a premium for a stick shift
cars vs. an automatic? My understanding is that in the '60's, it was
standard practice for the insurance industry to surcharge an owner for
having a muscle car mated with a manual tranny and NOT charge them if it was
a factory automatic. I am trying to find out when this practice started,
and how long it lasted for.
Follow up question: What was the insurance industry's 'official' reasoning
for this?
Any ideas?
Thanks!
John
