Yes, there are two 331" Chrysler / Imperial block castings. The '51-53 331" motors (call them "early 331s") are generally called "extended bellhousing" type because the bellhousing (inside which the torque converter rides) is cast as part of the block (thus "extended"). The '54-55 331" motors (call them "late 331s") have a separate bellhousing casting. Up until about two years ago the value of the early motors was much less because of the problems adapting them to an assortment of transmissions hot rodders would like to use. Then someone (I believe Wilcap) finally, after all these decades, came up with adapters from the early style to several popular transmissions. This raised the value of the early 331 hemis. The early DeSoto and Dodge hemis never did have the extended bellhousing block casting. They were always the 'short' style. Brighter then me......are there two 331 engines, one longer than the other? A transmission shop that has been very helpful to my 300 fleet wants a 331 hemi for a street rod project and I found him a 1951 180 horse version but he claims it is the longer version and he needs a shorter one. This is news to me, was there really two different dimensioned versions? Also, anyone have a source for rear quarter glass for the 67 B bodied two door hardtops?
