Eric hit the nail on the head! While I had always have believed the 300 was a muscle car, and the first one, the common definition is:
"A muscle car, by the strictest definition, is an intermediate sized, performance oriented model, powered by a large V8 engine, at an affordable price. Most of these ... were based on 'regular' production vehicles."
The 300 indisputably remains, however, the car that "started it all."

Just a thought...
Perhaps the manner in which they were marketed. The 300s were
positioned as personal power and luxury vehicles to men of financial
means. Goats, mustangs and the like were targeted toward a younger and
less affluent market of both men and women.
