Tom: I had similar problems with my 1955 C-300 and it turns out I must have tapped the distributor enough to unsnap one of the two holddown snaps that hold the cap in place. That resulted in the cap tilting and the rotor contacting the distributor cap pins and wrecking both. The cap does not fit snugly and securely into slots or tabs and can be slightly off and not be visibly evident. I think this happened once before and I ended up blowing off a muffler. Mellow! Embarassing dumb errors to admit, but willing to share experience to help others. You might have hit your distributor cap while working on heater hose. The thought also comes to me that if you just bypassed the heater core, you might be bypassing too much water around the engine and affecting the cooling. Keep us posted, even if it is embarassing.
