[Chrysler300] '56 Back-up lights

Hi all,
Quick question.  Do the back-up lights,  that are activated by the 
back-up switch on the tranny, light up only if the car is running and 
you punch "R" or would they also light up if you punch "R" with only 
the ignition switch on.?
