Rich and list.There is no need for a ballast resestor on a 6 volt system. 6 volts will not fry the points,12 volts WILL at slow speed( too much saturation time) The resistor soaks up excess current and converts it to heat passing about 5 volts to the points.When the rpm comes up the pulses are shorter and it cools and passes more voltage .12 at 2000 or so.There is a bypass from the starter circuit to give 12 volts for start.
