Re: [Chrysler300] That Damn Bolt!

Matt,

I had this problem with the power steering pump mounting bolt on an old
Dodge many years ago. It would periodically break in the middle of a
gratuitous burnout or a brisk acceleration run.

Turned out it was due to the fact the mounting bracket for the p/s pump
was "tweaked" a little such that the pulley was at an angle a few
degrees off from the crank pulley.

Once this was fixed, (straightend mounting bracket, it wasn't off by
much by the way!) haven't broken another one, but have gone through many
tires.

By the way, to look at it, it was VERY difficult to see the
discrepancy. Suggest taking the bracket off to see if it is flat/staight
and then look at the crank pulley when revving the engine to see if it
is spinning true.

Best regards,

Richard Osborne
It snowed AGAIN last night!

OK. Here's a bit of frustration that I've been going through, for
years at
this point.

The year is 1962.

The engine is a 413 with A/C.

The bolt in question is the one that holds the alternator adjusting
bracket
to the front of the engine (not the bolt that holds the bracket to the
alternator itself).

Anyway.that bolt keeps snapping off! I have to constantly drill the
threaded portion out of the bolt hole.

I've tried a normal bolt from a hardware store.

I've tried a hardened bolt with a flat & a split washer.

I've cleaned out the threads before screwing the new one in, each
time.

I just don't understand why the head of the bolt keeps snapping off.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

Matt Allyn
