For anyone interested, there is a small (less than 1/4 inch in diameter)
spring loaded button that when pushed will release the knob and stem so
can be removed from the switch. The stem has a flattened surface that
runs it's entire length. That area used to rotate a rrheostatthat
controls the intensity of the dash lights. Therefore, the stem can only
be inserted in one oorientation This design light switch has been used
at least since the 50s and thru the 80s. The orientation of the switch
in the dash was determined by the auto's manufacturer and the location of
the button on the switch is determined by its manufacturer. It will be
either on the side where the wires are attached or on the opposite clean
side. If it is buried in the wires it is much more difficult to find and
operate. On my G it is "in the wires".
