Tom,
A common cause of a stumble when opening the throttle is a bad accelerator 
pump. This pump is located in the left front corner of an AFB and provides a 
squirt of raw fuel into the primary carb throats when the throttle is 
opened. This covers a flat spot (lean condition) that occurs upon throttle 
opening during the time the idle circuit ceases to function and the main 
circuit begins to function. The pump is a piston affair that will come with 
the lid of the AFB when you remove it. The piston has a leather seal at the 
bottom end and goes down into a well in the main casting. If this leather is 
cracked, torn, or simply hardened with age. or perhaps crimped or turned up 
when the carb was reassembled the pump does not deliver adequate fuel to 
cover the lean condition and the engine will stumble on acceleration.

Take the air cleaner off and manually crack the throttle full open (ENGINE 
OFF!). Two strong jets of fuel should squirt from a double nozzle located 
between the front throats. If the stream is spotty, bubbly, or inconsistent, 
replace the pump.
