The solenoid is definitely on the starter. From what you've said, the solenoid is the problem. I suggest you either have the existing one rebuilt, or find a GOOD rebuilt. 

When I rebuilt mine 15 years ago, the rebuild explained to me that there were 3 different field coils fitted in the starter, depending on application. He checked and found that the Dodge Power Wagon had the heaviest field coil, and that they used it until 1965. I told him to install that part. I was surprised to hear that Chrysler was still using non-gear reduction starters in '65. (Anyone else heard/know this?) He replaced the part, rebuilt the unit, and I haven't had a starter problem in 15 years. 
Prior to the starter rebuild, I was experiencing "heat soak" (engine hard to turn when hot). The starter I originally installed was a rebuilt off-the-shelf unit with the smallest field winding in it. The problem left and never returned. No more heat soak...none...zip.

I verified the part number (CHRYSLER No. 1889200) from the A.E.A. tune-up spec's very kindly sent to me by Mr. Fern Rivard a number of years ago. 

It's been a long time since I removed my starter, so I won't comment on the R&R, except to say, that It wasn't very difficult and took about 2 hours, not rushing. Take a look at the factory service manual or a Motor's or Chilton and read the section on starter removal

Hi,
Started my G a week ago with no problem. Never have had a problem on
turning the engine!! Three days ago, nothing but a click. I hit what I
think is the solenoid (sits on the starter, doesn't it?) and the engine
turned but didn't catch, then nothing but a click since.
#1. The solenoid does attach to the starter motor, doesn't it? It's not
away from the starter, like on the fender well, is it?
#2. Three years ago, May 2000, the Chrysler 300 Club published a list of
NAPA parts numbers for the 300G, and in it it has ST-103 Starter
Solenoid...
w/MDT starter. What's a MDT starter? It also has a ST-106 Starter
Solenoid...w/1889200 starter.

As you know, the starter, viewed from underneath, is hindered with the
exhaust, as well as other stuff, and looks very difficult to get at. Looks
impossible to get at from above. Am I correct??? What's the proper way to
get at it? What's the proper way to identify the starter motor?

Could my problem be something other than the solenoid??

I am by no means a mechanic, but I would like to get
the proper item to repair my problem before taking it to my mechanic, if I
can.
