58 300 carb question

I am restoring a 58 300 convertible. When disassembling the engine there were phenolic spacers between the carbs and the intake manifold. From pictures I have seen of other 58's, I don't see the spacers. Are the supposed to be there? Were they added by a service bulletin, or should they be left off.
