I coiled a very hard and weathered windshield rubber for my 60 Imperial into a 5 gal. pail and poured in 2 or 3 gallons of WD 40. I then forgot about it for a couple of weeks. What I removed from the bucket was a grotesquely swollen window rubber, but boy was it soft and flexible. I figured I'd ruined it, but I had lots of time before the window was going back in , so I hung it outside most of the summer. Buy fall I took it to my body man for an opinion. He installed it without any problems. It's still in place after 3 years.
My advise would be to WATCH IT CAREFULLY once it's soaking. Remove it every day or two and wipe it down to inspect it.
There must be other things than WD 40 to soak rubber in , but this is what had been recommended to me.

My 300 H resto is progressing nicely. I'm at the point of installing 
the front and back glass. My original rubber gaskets are dirty and a 
little stiff but not cracked or deteriorated. I've heard many 
stories in the past about soaking them in something, but I forgot 
what that something is. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to 
use to soften and clean these rubbers ???
