There have been so many reported scams out of Nigeria(60 minutes, 20/20, Dateline) over the years, that anyone scammed by folks from this country must have been living in a cave to have missed the reports. 

My wife works in the retail jewelry business and have often seen such scammers on expensive products such as Rolex watches. Credit card companies and banks have often assured her(even insisted) that a credit card transaction or cashiers check is good and later she finds that it is not. She has never been taken as if she smells a rat, it probably is a rat and goes with her instinct and is willing to forego a sale if her gut tells her so.

Banks and credit card companies are just like a call to the IRS for tax advice. If they give you bad advice you are still stuck. 

I have sold autos in the past and even with a cashiers check I will escort the buyer(even did this one time with a major dealer of unique autos who purchased a BMW M-635 from me one time) to the bank or credit union on which it is drawn and exchange it for either cash or a check made by the financial institution payable to me.

Irritates a buyer sometimes but I have never had a problem. No sale is worth the hassles that can come out of a bad one.

It's sad that we have to catagotrize any
correspondence or opportunity from that continent as
being a potential fraud. ther have been too many
instances over the years of various levels of this
scam. I have always felt that if someone is not
hagling over the price and or buys on the first call,
caution must be exercised.
