I think it's the resistance to change that makes us more discriminatory when it comes to musical taste. I remember when I was in high school in the early 70s, my brother, sister and I would listen to what was then rock and roll. My dad would say "turn that down! How can you listen to that stuff ?" When my kids were teenagers, I said the same thing to them in the early 90s. Now I hear the junk on the radio and think "my grandchildren will be listening to this noise !" 

Along those same lines, last weekend my wife and I were riding along when a kid in a Honda pulled up beside us at a traffic light. This car was slammed down to the ground, had one of those fart pipe exhausts and sounded like a tin can full of pissed off bumble bees. We looked at each other and laughed but then it hit me. This kid has done the same thing to his car that we did in the 70s: personalized his ride. When I was young the coolest car trick was to jack up the rear end with air shocks and put a pair of glass packs on. Of course, there will never be anything as neat as the sound of a big V8 with loud pipes. But today the youth have a completely different array of vehicles to choose from. Since there is nothing out there that compares to Cuda's, Road Runners, Super Bee's, they have to choose from Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans, etc. They're relatively cheap and plentiful, and plenty of aftermarket things to trick them out. 

So, my point is, there will always be change. When we were younger, change was more easily tolerated. Now that we're older, that tolerance is diminishing, and that's a natural thing.

I am sorry for the misunderstanding on my comments on Celine. They were not about the ugly, they were about the music. However I did enjoy your list of artists, though probably would not have put Ms. Warwick there. However she is great as a Psychic Reader infomercial tout.


Incidentally I am not anti-woman in my choice of artists. Loved Patsy Cline. 

I do agree with your comments of the music today that clutters up the airwaves. I am not certain why this is(unless the music is really as bad as it sounds) as I get older. I have a theory that just as you lose your ability to learn a new language as you age, perhaps our brain shuts down to many inputs of new experiences(however I do love riding the Harley that I have just acquired and learned to ride and gotten a license at age 62) and perhaps your brain just cannot understand and interpret this noise that you hear as music that you are suppose to enjoy and it just remains noise just as the words from a new language that you are exposed to remains so.

Sean,
This announcement sure generated a lot of response! First I must say: I can
respect everyone's opinion on the subject. About the 20 years thing,
that's the exact same thing they said about Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling
Stones, the Drifters, Dion Warwick, Waylon Jennings, Jr., Ricky Scaggs, and
the list goes on. All of those guys are much uglier than Celine, and some
are uglier than Richardo, but I don't think it's all about beauty or looks.
I'm not saying I love all of Celine Dion's music but most of it is at least
enjoyable. Her music is a lot better than some of that wanna-be music I
hear cluttering up today's airways. I'm 48 years old and like listening to
the oldies. Celine may not be the most beautiful woman in celebrity status
but as stated earlier, she's an icon and, to some extent, an idol to today's
youth, boomers, yuppies, and soccer moms, all a potential Chrysler market.
I must say, not many celebrities can remove themselves from the limelight
for an extended time and then come back and be better and more popular as
Celine Dion did. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can do what she did
and succeed. I don't think it's as much about looks (lord knows some of
today's Mopars are uglier than the Edsel!) as it is about reaching a varied
and diverse market. Celine's impact is yet to be seen but it might surprise
all of us. We'll have to wait and see.

In conclusion, I think the big D needs to do something to compete with all
those ads we're bombarded with from GM, Ford, Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi,
etc. Anything is better than nothing. When I was a teenager, I remember the
TV commercials for the Dodge Boys, the Road Runner, the Rapid Transit
System, etc. and they had an impact on me to the point of craving anything
Mopar. When it was time for me to buy my first car, it could only be a
Dodge. I refused to even look at anything else. It turned out to be a 61
Polara, but it was a Dodge! I was the proudest kid in the neighborhood and
nobody messed with my 361 except the rich kid with the new Challenger.
Those days are long gone but the initial impact lives on. I'll be a Mopar
man forever because of those TV commercials.
