Paul,
Did the kid hook up the throttle linkage? running a torquflite with no throttle linkage or misadjusted throttle/shift linkage will kill it faster than anything.
Also, if you loose one of the alignment dowls between the engine & trans the pump will go out & trash the rest of things.

His main problem is trying to pay his way through college makes for
somewhat limited funds, living on champus has helped while his 70
Newport lies dead.
