Here's some info regarding Dollar/Thrifty car rentals -- to the best of my 
knowledge.
They both used to be owned by Chrysler but were spun off into new companies.
They have now been recombined under a new company called DTG Operations, Inc.
The reason I know this is as follows:
In August of 2004 I reserved a 300  from Thrifty for a  week-long trip I was 
taking from Chicago to Washington, DC,  and back departing on October 29, 
2004.
When I went to pick up the car at Midway airport on October 28th, they said I 
could not have one because I was not in from out of town and flying back to 
somewhere else. I asked for the logic behind this. The counter-person told me 
that during the month of September they had about a dozen 300s and Magnums 
seized by the police because of street punks using them for drug deals and 
drive-by shootings.
Sometimes the police would not release the car for 2 weeks.
So , as of October 1, 2004, no more 300s or Magnums for local people, even if 
you told them you were leaving the area -- and then returning ---- like me.
They told me Dollar would say the same thing. So I went to their counter and 
they told me the same story. The counter-person said they are managed by the 
same company, and hence have similar policies. So I wound up with a Durango 
from Dollar.

While on my trip, I got clobbered by a piece of road debris kicked up by a 
car in front of me. I had to make a report to the rental car company, which 
turned out to be DTG Operations, Inc. In Tulsa ,OK.
The customer rep taking my report verified the joint ownership of 
Dollar/Thrifty.

Regarding the 300/Magnum policy in Chicago --- I do not know if it has 
changed.
