[Chrysler300] TIRES

When the first came out, I bought a set of Coker WW radials for a B. I
liked the way they drove and the way they look. I believe I bought them
in 1996 or so--just after the North Carolina Meet. In 2002 I drove the
B to the Newport RI Meet, and noticed some vibration, and wobble in the
front at slow speeds. I drove the 300-miles from Newport to Maine at
highway speeds. When I got home I found a carbuncle on the left front
the size and thickness of my hand. I bought a new tire from Coker.
Later than summer I visited Russ Vaughan 50 miles away in Augusta. On
the way home the right front blew out, at highway speed. I replaced
that tire--and the rear tires and the spare. The tires were about 6
years old and had <5000 miles--but they had dry rot and tread
separation.
In 2003 I drove a '68 convertible to the Battle Creek meet; it had the
radials that came with it when I bought it in 1999. At Battle Creek
the front tires were carbuncled like the B had been. I replaced them
with inexpensive radials. Halfway back to Maine, the rear tires
developed tread separation. Those tires, it turns out, were 25 years
old.
I guess I'm a believer that tires that are more often parked than run
wear out in ways not easily visible--and they are not safe after a
relatively short number of years.
Just a witness to what happened.
