[Chrysler300] 62 disc brakes conversion - reply

Hi Pat,

Someday I must really put up a Web page talking about various brake
conversions and what's available for what...

With regards to your '62 300: it's a Short Wheelbase (122") car.

The first conversion that you can perform, and the easiest, is to upgrade
to 1963/1964 Chrysler front drum brakes. These are vastly superior to the
"center-plane", dual wheel cylinder units on your car, and the car will stop
very well, with none of the infernal pulling to one side or another. I
suggest that you try to find the larger 3" setup as found on 300's and New
Yorkers. A good source would be Murray Park - mbpark@xxxxxxxxxx . With
that conversion, the original master cylinder can be retained. You will need
to obtain the whole "corner" including the steering arm. One only needs to
remove three "bolts" to install: the upper and lower ball joints need to be
separated from the spindle, and the steering arm needs to be separated from
the outer tie rod. No alignement should be necessary with the new spindle /
steering arm assembly installed, but probably a good idea to at least check
the toe.

The second conversion is to disc brakes. There are currently two kits
available: AAJ Brakes in Oregon at http://www.aajbrakes.bravepages.com/
and Stainless Steel Brakes in NY at http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com/

And that's about it as far as conversions available for Short Wheelbase
Chryslers.
