Re: [Chrysler300] headlight door relay problem

Hi Steve,

Many many moons ago I had a '70 SportFury GT with the same problem. If you remove the cover over the top part of the headlight motor (the part where the big long rod that opens and closes the headlight doors passes through) you'll find a small plasic cam overtop of the gear that mates to the worm gear from the motor. This little cam is what opens the full up or full down limit switch. These limit switches are what stops the motor from spinning when the doors are open or closed all the way. Either the limit switch has come out of adjustment (doubt it....) or the cam has worn to the point that it doesn't open the switch. You MAY be able to adjust the limit switch a bit and get it to work. It's more than likely though that you'll need to replace the cam and or the gear it rides on.

Chrysler used to sell a repair kit that replaced both the cam and the gear I don't have a parts book handy at the moment but will see if I can find a part number for you this evening.

This motor was fairly common on the hidden headlight cars in 70 and 71. You may be able to find a decent replacement too. The weak link in this assembly though is the nylon gear and the little plastic cam.

Unfortunately, I don't have that car anymore but would appreciate any leads though on a nice '70 or '71 SportFury GT. Thanks.

Best Regards,

Hi....I have a unique problem on my 1970 300 Hurst.....the headlight doors open fine when you turn on the lights, but when you close the doors, the electric motor keeps running.....we held the knob on the motor, and heard a clicking behind the switch inside....my "expert" friends say it's a relay behind the dash.....any suggestions?
