Richard & group.
I experienced similar dead cylinder, just this week on a '62 383 engine.
I just finished installing the rockers on the engine which was
original in the car and with unknown miles on it (either 33K or 133K
miles per the cars odometer). The car has set some 20 years. some 7
years ago I I removed the pans, covers and rockers and cleaned the
engine in and out and painted it. I just got it started this last week
after trying for days getting it to start. When I put new (set I had
on shelf for years) of Champion spark plugs in i finally got it started.
but it ran terrible with lots of smoke out the exhaust. I ran a
compression check of the cylinders and got readings of 155 psig average
(cold) on 7 cylinders and zero on #7 , Thinking I had a hole in the
piston, or stuck valve I Put compressed air into the #7 and put my hand
over the the oil filler hole and carburetor - air was coming through the
carb. I removed the valve cover and cranked over the engine and saw
that the valves were opening and closing. thinking I had a bad intake
valve I removed the rocker arm (preparing to remove the head) when I
discovered the #7 intake push rod was bent in an "S" and the top side
of the lifter broken off. I also observed that two of the Champion
spark plugs were not firing (clean as new)
so I tested the resistance of the plugs, with my Fluke tester and got
the following readings;
1,6 ohm, 0.6 ohm, 53.7 ohm. 0 ohm (no continuity), 5.7 ohm, 9,7 ohm,
5.1 ohm, 3,2 ohm.
I then pulled off my parts shelf a new set of Autolite Plugs and
measured their resistance and got consistence readings of 5 ohms,
plus/minus 1 ohm.
With the replaced push rod, lifter, and Autolite spark plugs I got the
engine started and running like new with the #7 cylinder now reading
154 psig. This proves to me, first hand, what I read on the the Dodge
Shelby news group site that the Champion plugs made the Dodge Shelby's
run like "crap" when compared to Nepodenzia (spelling??) or some of
the other quality Mfg. plugs.
I suspect that the rod jumped out the the initially collapsed lifter (or
I may not have seated the rod in the lifter - although I had checked
each rod after tighten the rocker shaft

little time to restore all of them)

Didn't even get a twitch out of the needle on the compression gauge. I put my finger over the hole and didn't feel anything (forcing of air out or suction). It's like there is no piston.
