[Chrysler300] 61 Chrysler question

Hello group,
I'm trying to help some new friends with a restoration of a 61 Chrysler (non-300).
I never knew or noticed before, but the license plate lamp lense on the rear of 61 Chryslers (all?) appears to be fastened with "one-way" flathead screws which can be tightened, but the heads are formed in such a way as to prevent loosening of them with a flat blade screwdriver. Seems odd that Chrysler would pick just this one piece to fasten to the car this way. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove them? I checked my 57,000 original mile G, and sure enough, the same kinds of screws are on my car as well. I suggested a pair of needle nose vice-grips to the folks trying to restore their Chrysler, but they did not have any success with that approach. Any comments or suggestions appreciated.
I learn more about these cars every day.
John
