The A/C system needs to move lots of freon to carry away the heat.  If
there is a filter dryer it may be partially clogged.  If there is an in
line orifice as is currently used by many manufacturers, it may have the
same problem.  Someone else in the club may know the exact details of
your system.  If clogging is the problem then replacing the offending
component will solve the cooling problem.  Perhaps the charge was never
correct and even if it was, it would not stay that way long because of
the leak.  If very cool means the outlet air temperature is in the 40s,
your only problem is the leak.

To fix the leak will require the system to be opened whether the seal is
replaced or compressor swapped.  Care must be used when you remove and
install the clutch to prevent damage to the compressor.

As for the freon, R414A and R414B (Hot Shot) are drop in replacements for
R12.   R414B is also drop in for R134 systems.  Neither require any
component or oil changes.  Cost is less than $10 per pound but R414A can
only be purchased in 25lb. bottles.  I believe the Hot Shot can be
purchased at auto parts stores in 12 or 14oz cans.  I have used R414A in
R12 systems for years with excellent results.  A/C repair shops will not
do this retrofit for fear of legal problems.  It is legal for private
parties however except possibly in California.
