[Chrysler300] Drive Shaft Boot

I'm getting ready to replace the front u-joint on our '62 NY wagon and the
boot on our '62 300.
Is there a trick to making it so the book lasts and doesn't rip?
I've tried to bend a cotter pin, so that it rides under the clamp, thus
allowing a bit of room for heat expansion.
Anyone else have good tricks?
Thanks,
Matt Allyn
