Auto World Loses Rosenbusch

Automotive history lost one of its heroes February 7 when Otto Rosenbusch died. Otto, 75, retired in 1990 from Chrysler Corporation as Director of Special Events, where he also had charge of both the company's archives and its collection of vintage Chrysler and American Motors vehicles.

He was best known around Detroit and among auto historians, however, as the man who saved Chrysler's incomparable collection of its vintage cars, foundation of the relatively new and official Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Mich.

The story is that, in the dark days of Chrysler before the Federal government loan guarantee that at the time saved the corporation, Otto got wind that accountants were looking for everything of value that could be sold for cash.

He craftily and secretly, not telling his bosses, shifted the historic vehicles to an abandoned garage at the far side of the Chrysler grounds, literally on the other side of the tracks and not likely to be stumbled across by beady-eyed bean-counters. Likewise he is credited with preventing corporate archives from being tossed. His camouflage was successful and the cars survived the dual threat of private collectors or scrap-yard crushers.

After retirement he served as a volunteer and trustee of the National Automotive History Collection at the Detroit Public Library. -Mike Davis

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for letting us know about Otto Rosenbusch. I remember him with his red C300. Possibly the original owner? He attended various meets that I also attended, probably 300 Intl. and WPC. He was a very pleasant and friendly man who did not flaunt his importance with Chrysler or automotive history. His daughter, Karla, has written some definitive articles, including one about 300s. As I recall, I wrote to her one time about one of her articles and some detail that was incorrect. She wrote back thanking me, but also saying that she should have known better considering her father's involvement with the marque. She put it in a humorous context saying that she would probably get a little ribbing from him. Very down to earth. That is not always the case with writers who perceive themselves as "experts" and are unwilling to admit any errors.

Hi Don,

I had the pleasure of meeting Otto at the Plymouth meet, but had written correspondences with him prior to that. At that meet he had some original parts for sale and I was fortunate enough to purchase them. That evening at the banquet Christie and I sat with them and had a wonderful evening.

He was not the original owner of the Tango Red C300, but had purchased it from a widow in West Virginia. As I remember the story her husband was the original owner of the car and it was his pride and joy. Once again if memory serves me correctly the widow contacted Chrysler regarding the car and Otto made a trip down to see the car and purchased it.

Chrysler convert,53 Chrysler Saratoga 180 HP Hemi ,55 DeSoto firedome hemi,
66 Charger,68 Plymouth Fury convert, various New Yorkers, 57 De Soto Gold

others not worth mentioning. OK I'am a Mopar freak, I'll admit it.

I was sorry to hear about Otto's passing. I met him through my classic
car mechanic right after I purchased my '55 C300. Otto and the mechanic
had been friends for quite some time even though the mechanic was a
lot younger than Otto. Heck, he's even younger than me. If any of you
are interested, I have a few pics that are published on the 300 Club's
website that were taken in front of the WPC museum a few years ago.
The three cars belong to Otto, myself, and Will Johnston. Mine is the
white one and Will's is the black one. Otto and Will are in one of the
pictures. Wish I would've taken a closer picture of him. If any of you
are interested, the website address is:

Hello members,
Looking for at least one, preferably two of these.
It is the back half of the alternator housing for 1961 (the wide-spaced fin backing).
My alternator back is cracked and cannot hold the diodes in place. I also found a second front half, so if anyone has extra backs, I can actually wind up with two units, and have a backup.
Thanks,
John

Subject: RE: Fw: past and future meets

I'm just entering my third year as a member and am curious if this club has
ever held a club meet in the Northwest? What is the likelihood of this
happening?

Are there any other members out there that are involved in other Chrysler
clubs that might be holding some events in the Pacific Northwest? My busy
schedule and often light wallet prevents me from driving (or flying) 1000's
of miles to any of the 300 International meets. I enjoy being a member of
this club, mainly due to this listserve, but only seeing the meets by
pictures posted on the website and chating with other owners via email isn't
quite enough any longer. Can anyone help?

On another note, after reading many of the emails that were sent over the
past few days I would like to clarify on behalf of myself and other members
who own non-letter 300's that regardless of having a letter designation, our
cars are very much "real" 300's. I didn't put the 300 emblems on my two '65
cars.........Chrysler did.

I understand the rationale behind not allowing non-letter cars into shows
and judged events along side letter cars representing the 300 Club
International but I fail to understand why we would never have a joint meet
with another club where non-letter cars and other Chryslers could be
welcomed as well. After all, it's all about the people at these meets,
right?

Hope I haven't offended anyone, it wasn't my intention.

300'ly Ryan Hill (Vancouver)

1) From what Wayne just said about the man who apparently saved many
historic Chrysler cars and records, it is sad to hear of his passing.
All too often people decide because something is old, it is worthless and
must be trashed, or disposed of. The future will decide that Otto was
right, and for that many will owe him thanks. May there be more like him -
the world/corporations is/are too much at risk of being run by bean
counters, and bite me if I am wrong, what have bean counters ever created,
left, mankind !? Compare this to Chrysler's many gifted company men, it's
Exner, and GM's Harley Earl, Ford's Iaccoca, etc.
2) I purchased a 300C rear bumper apron on ebay - what is the usual mail
shipping cost of something about this size and weight within the US, should
$30-40 cover East Coast to LA ?! I was told way higher, but maybe this is
true ?! The apron is about 5 foot by about 7 inches, just sheet metal, not
heavy.

Heat wave weather over here in SA presently, 114 degrees just west of State
capital Tuesday, 110 predicted for it Saturday - hope you all are having
better 300 driving weather there.

aussie Chris

having attended 2 meets organised by each of the 2 clubs,(4 in total) I can say that there are a whole bunch of nice people in both clubs, whose friendship I value. I have not been a member of either club long enough to appreciate the differences, but can understand there are likely some real issues. bottom line is we all appreciate these cars, letter or otherwise, & being a long way north in this continent, I really appreciate the opportunity to meet with others who drive these vehicles to the various meets & exchange knowledge & experience wit h them. Whatever the background, I would hope hope that we could"bury whatever hatchect there is"if there were members in both clubs in the vicinity willing to bring their cars to EITHER of the club's meets. I know there are a significant # of members who are registered with both clubs. the world is too small for petty differences. I do appreciate our club's adherence to detail, as it is very constructive input for restoration of my c
ars. I do not aspire to a couple of perfect trailer queens, as that is not my objective, but if I am going to do a reasonably good restoration, I REALLY appreciate being able to draw on the vast experience that this club offers to do an appropriate job. A lot of that comes from the concours judging standards. After attending the Ohio meet, I have many excellent reference photos to work from. In addition, I now know a bit more about drag racing, so will be better prepared to beat john hertog next time we meet @ the line. Lighten up guys!
