The aluminium TorqueFlites, starting in 1962, could be held in second with
the 2 button and shifted manually into drive. All the pre-62 cast iron
transmissions would upshift into high all by themselves even when the 2
button was depressed. And it was always too early!! The only way I know of
the raise the 2-3 shift point on one of these old boxes was to remove the
tailshaft and the governor then lighten the governor weight in a lathe, not
a job for amateures. Too light and the shift point was then too high. What
year and type of trans were you referring too Val?  LGJ

Well guys:



This is all very, very interesting and informative.  Since I have never experienced the thrill of actually racing one of these brutes I have nothing of substance to recommend.  Except to reinforce the suggestion of practice, practice, practice those line launches.  That is probably where this race will be won.



Since I am a new member and not yet on the roster, I have a request.



I see that a number of you are recommending removing your air cleaners (just temporarily for the race) and I see that Don Verity has just listed a K&N Air filter number.  It reminds me that I am in desperate need of a pair of complete Air Cleaners for my '63 / '64 Short Ram setup.  I have heard that the club at one time had a few repro sets produced.  Does anyone have a line on any that might be laying around?  Not the oval ones, The Round ones.  Also, if the club would sponsor another run of repro Air Cleaners, I would certainly be the first in line with a deposit.  I'll even beg, Please, Please!

Hi all:

I have to beg to differ with the e-mails stating that the 300F is not so
quick off the line.  My first new car was a '56 Dodge D500.  I never lost a
drag race until the tri-powered Pontiacs came out.  My D500 was blazing off
the line.  BUT, having owned and driven both the D500 and now my 300F, it
would have never stood a chance against my 300F.

In January of 1996, John Characky finished rebuilding my engine, etc.  We put
later model 440 heads on it but all else remained stock.  I could run 87
octane with no pinging at 12 degrees btdc.  The throttle was extremely
touchy.  With 92 octane, and just a touch of the throttle, the F would
literally leap across intersections, so much so, that I opted to back off the
timing to stock 5 degrees btdc.  It is still quick but more managable. 
Before, I had a guilt complex hoping that other drivers would not think I was
showing off.  I don't need a ticket.

If Lefty runs 95+ octane and doesn't screw up off the line, that bowtie will
never catch him.

Lefty has been hired to be the secretary to the crazy goings-on that are the
result of your voluminous response to Jett's plea for advice.  Larry's out
working on the F but this is what I see so far.  He has removed the front
bumper, all three extra seats inside, the spare, jack, tools, trunk carpet,
wheel covers, exhaust manifolds(!) front sway bar and nuts holding front
shocks on top.  He has replaced the 440 that was there with a 413 because the
pistons and crank are lighter (There is a swinging water bucket example that
explains all this perfectly clear).  He has bought Hooser Slicks on Ford
wheels, raised the left torsion bar up to load the right rear spinning tire,
and is currently removing the aluminum torqueflight the previous owner
installed because it shifts to high without asking.  The rear springs have
been unclamped and icebags procured for the space under the intakes as well
as the incoming gas line swirled around many times in a coffee can filled
with dry ice on it's way to carbs dryer ducted to the front of the radiator. 
The air cleaners have been on and off so many times that the threads are worn
based on the latest thinking regarding their importance.  Most belts have
been loosened, the chokes wired stright up and down (darn hard to start it
now) and belt dressing has been sprayed all over the rear tires plus the
leftover amount applied to his hands to grip the steering wheel tighter.  The
front tires have 35 pounds in them and the rears have 25 on one side and 40
on the other to please both schools of thought.  K AND N filters are inside
the filter cans even though not attached to the car.  (Don't want to take any
chances here)  Jett has left the distributor loosely bolted so it can catch
any of the recommendations from 4 to 12 degrees it sees fit at time of
battle.  He has the weekend to add or subract any more pieces you can
suggest.  The one item all agreed on is in a 5 gallon tank.  It is 114 proof
leaded firepower.  The stuff sure stinks.  Jett has to bring his truck in
tomorrw to bring it home as the fumes from even the closed and sealed can in
the trunk are powerful.  Thanks to all that have contributed to the group
