Put in a vote for the '55 Chrysler 300-C of Will and Joyce Johnston of Novi, Mich., as "Car of the WeeK" at the Detroit News web site. http://pc99.detnews.com/joyrides/carofweek.hbs Gee I'd be disturbed if the Model A Ford or '46 Chevy wins this! Vic Phillips, my favorite old car glass supplier is e-mailing me regarding the idea that he is looking into getting the '60 Chrysler and DeSoto hardtop, sedan and convertible windshield remade in a new mold. That is the deeply convex bubble windshield which also fits '61- 64 Chrysler convertibles but not other '61-64 body styles. This also fits 1960 Dodge passenger cars, 1961 Dodge convertibles, 1962-64 Dodge 880 convertibles, 1960 Plymouths and the '61 Plymouth convertibles. Incidentally, the '60 Chrysler station wagon is the only '60 Chrysler it does not fit. This is the NAGS # 590 windshield. It would be tinted and shaded and would have the PROPER bubble shape. I'm aware that there has been availability of a reproduction of this windshield from Scandinavia through Timo Tanskanen in California for several years. Timo is a friend of mine. The complaint on that reproduction has been two-fold. There is not enough "bubble" in the shape of the glass and the manufacturer's logo or "bug" is in the laminate and can not be removed by buffing for show car restorations. Vic assures me he intends to have it done "right" this time. If any of you have looked into the existing reproduction, you know this particular piece of glass is selling somewhere near $900 and then is not satisfactory to all. Vic is looking at a very considerable investment to make the mold. He would like to get some feedback as to what the market is for this particular windshield. He will try to keep the retail under $1000. It would take about a couple dozen to break even and the price could be lower if the quantity goes up and if they sell quickly. Please reply DIRECTLY to me (NOT the whole list) if you would definitely be interested in this reproduction and I will give accumulated feedback to Vic. If there is broad generalized discussion regarding this topic, I'm sure that is welcome on our e-mail list. I think the best label I could put on him would be to call him an obsolete glass supplier and broker. I first starting seeing his name in Hemmings perhaps 20 years ago now and I've done business with him over probably half that time and several times. Anyone I've ever referred to him has come back to me with a thank you. He has a warehouse full of glass he has picked up all over the country as well as being in contact with hundreds of glass company warehouses and dealers who have obsolete stock. You could say he is similar to LoCan in the sense of brokering except I think LoCan is basically an office with a computer and applies their considerable markup and could care less about their customers because there is always another call waiting. I've had Vic come up with pieces of glass that I asked him to find 21 months earlier, on his own he worked on getting a windshield for my Studebaker Avanti shipped at almost no cost to a wholesaler's warehouse near me in California, and I appreciate his honesty about any imperfection prior to selling me the glass instead of the usual "oh well" most suppliers give you after it is at your garage. Johnson" <laurence_g_johnson@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: 413 distibutor If the distributor is a common IBS Autolite or Chrysler cast iron dual point it will have oilite bronze bushings at the top and bottom of the housing. If it is a tach drive type it will have ball bearings at the top end to support the tach drive mechanism and an oilite bushing at the bottom end. The all bronze type tend to wear out and allow the shaft to become loose and upset the dwell causing it to wander. Unfortunately, the shaft uaually wears too. There is an oil well at the side fof the distributor housing to lube the top bushing but few ever did this. The bottom bushing is splash oiled and is usually good. Most ot the time both the top bushing and the shaft need replacement. If you can find a good shaft, any competent machinist with a lathe can make a new bushing. Thre are pressed into the housing. The ball bearing type seem to run forever without problem. >From: "Jennifer Allyn" <gearhead.girl@xxxxxxxxxxx> >Reply-To: <gearhead.girl@xxxxxxxxxxx> >To: <chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> >Subject: [Chrysler300] 413 distibutor >Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 14:22:38 -0700 > >The factory dual point distributor out of Jennifer's '62 300 413 block >has movement of the shaft.
