Chrysler has often done strange things in production. Club member Jerry
Kocur has a K
conv that he bought new that came with the large air cleaner. In concurs
events he has
been dinged for this but insists that's the way the car was equipped
originally. Dealers
have also been known to swap items in new car inventory so who really
knows. I have the
small air cleaner which is in fair but original condition. The decal with
filter
instructions is peeling but still readable and complete. If you or anyone
reading this

Alois,
You sparked a memory for me from a long time ago! When I was a
freshman at the Ohio State University, I drove a '70 Sport Fury GT
(distant cousin to the Hurst 300). I had trouble with the hidden
headlight motor not closing all the way. My local parts guy sold me a
"repair kit" for the nylon gear and the cam that actuates the limit
contacts that keep the doors from opening or closing to far.
Although I don't have any of these parts, I wanted to chime in with
some part numbers for you that might help in your search. The following
is straight from my '70 '71 parts book:
Code 8-34-278 Gear and Gasket Package '70 Chrysler Imperial and Dodge
3420922, Plymouth 3420910
Code 8-34-280 Motor, Rotating Headlamp '70 Chrysler Imperial and Dodge
3431438, Plymouth 3431437
I'm not sure why Plymouth is different from Chrysler, Imperial and
Dodge, but that's what the parts book reports.
Back then, in my case the little cam had worn enough that the motor
would continue to operate after the doors were all the way open. This
caused excessive wear on the nylon gear that opens and closes the
headlights. The motor itself was OK, just the fact the the worm gear
coming out of the motor had damaged the nylon gear that opens and closes
the headlights.

BTW, I no longer have this car, but would love to find another one.
Any leads from the group on '70 or '71 Sport Fury GTs or S-23s would be

One other thought on not starting is how long has the car set without
running and how many years old is the gasoline? Gasoline does lose its
thing after a certain time(hence gasoline preservatives). This could
cause an engine not in top tune to fail to start. My suspicion still is
that the motor is flooded(plugs fouled with carbon,oil or gas) if all else
checks out(spark at plugs and fuel at carb).

Pull a couple of plugs to see if they are fouled. They could have been
all fouled if you previously had started the car and not let it warm up
enough to open the choke thereby cleaning the plugs off. If you shut it
down before the plugs had cleaned up you could merely have a bunch of gas
fouled plugs and the engine may be very difficult to start if at all until
they are cleaned. If you are getting fuel(again by looking into the
carb(s) while hitting the pedal, spark by holding a wire a 1/2 inch from a
plug or ground while cranking, the distributor rotor is turning while
cranking(kinda rules out a broken timing chain), distributor is tightened
down(rules out slipped ignition timing problem) properly, make sure dist
cap not cracked and rotor is ok, wires have been known to break within
distributor also, then car should start easily unless plugs are badly
fouled. Low compression almost will never cause a engine to not start
unless plugs are fouling because of bad piston rings and even then should
start as unlikely that rings will foul all cylinder plugs. Car if
ignition, timing and fuel are present could start and run on 5 or 6
cylinders.
Trying running a wired directly from your battery positive to coil
positive to rule out ignition switch or ballast problems. Do not run long
like this as you will burn points.

As per other posts, the 12v ignition system in a Chrysler does have a
ballast resistor. But, the thing will not keep a car from starting.
The
symptom for a bad ballast resistor will be start but no run when key
is
returned to run position.
In any case, would suggest checking voltage at coil positive terminal
with
engine cranking. Voltage should be very close to battery voltage with
engine
cranking. If it much lower there is voltage drop. This will be some
where in
the wiring or connections or ignition switch. Ballast resistor is
bypassed
at the ignition switch to provide battery voltage to coil at start
only.
Voltage to coil is then dropped through ballast resistor when engine
is
running.
It is Christmas so, as a gift to all, I will spare you the details of
my
first encounter with this item which was very similar to the currently
described problem. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
