That plate should be the same as any '57 Chrysler or DeSoto with power brakes and may even be the same for Plymouth and Dodge and in '58 or '59.

I have a couple of the backing plates and I can part with one. There are
differences in them though, and I can't remember which ones I took from
which make car, so I'll have a look at the one on my 300 to make sure which

Subject: air conditioning question

Hello everyone,

       Im hoping we have an experienced a/c tech here who can offer some
advice.  Things are getting warm here in Phoenix and I'd like to get the air
working in my 70 300 daily driver.  I plan to replace the compressor ,
clutch, dryer and expansion valve and then fill 'er up with R134.
        I'm looking for suggestions on how to best flush out the system ( i
picked up a small vacuum pump that connects to my compressor ) and also what
to do about replacing the O-rings.  Do they have to be special O-rings or can
I just get an O-ring assortment and use what fits.  What about thread sealant
for all the connections? 
       I want to use the store bought cans of freon and the simple hose
set-up...  is anyone running their old rv2 compressor on R134 with sucess?  
Appreciate any suggestions.... it'll be 115 here soon  !

Lefty, your club reporter here.....reporting on the Mopar vs Bowtie contest
previously hyped on these pages.......Help me here on club protocol....is it
possible to delist a member?  Have we ever revoked membership for
incompetence?
Quentin Smith, using his considerable pull with the hierarchy at Sears Point,
arranges for the only staged, side-by-side grudge match of the evening to be
between the SS packaged Camaro of Rob Jett to face off with the 300F of his
dad with a 2.345 handicap allowed the ancient Chrysler.  Jett Sr  cuts a 4.63
reaction time which is illegal but close to the good thing vs. kid of 8.991. 
Chrysler is way out ahead at 1/8 mile with the 440 humming strong!!  Times at
1/8 are 10.881 for Sr and 8.991 for Jr. The handicap might work.  Trap speed
at 1/8 are 66.23 vs 83.26 with Chev holding the big number.  Final speed for
the Chrysler was 65.25 (!)  What happened here?  The silly twit on the big
car saw the big board all lite up showing 16.30 in large letters and thinking
the race over, let off letting the Chev pass him.  CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!  He
saw his dial-in number and thought the race was over.  The track is brand new
(first week) and no finish line is indicated anywhere, but still.  Race two,
not side by side, just against random bracket racer, had Quentin at the wheel
turning a 16.941 while punk-kid found a 13.650, his best of the night.  Dear
Old Dad, pulls all stops, reduces air in rear tires to 24 from the 32 they
had been packing due to general sloppiness of Jett the Elder, plus the timing
light was put in to play, advancing to factory specs from anti-knock plan
used with the 91 octane from other days, but now mixed well with 114 leaded.
Better understanding of where the end of the match was supposed to occur
helped our demoralized contender turn a 16.205 with an 85.92 top end.  As a
sympathy ploy I'm sure, young Jett than launched in LOW and was real
surprized when the 350 passed the redline and he had to find another gear
after the confusion resolved itself.  The time was in the high 14's for the
last try.  The best Bowtie was 13.650 plus the 2.345 handicap required a
15.994 by the noisy one and it just didn't happen.  The mostly 16-30 crowd
really enjoyed looking the Brute over and marveling at the cross rams.  I
heard a group of 20 somethings saying.....Why is that old man out flogging
that beauty?  It should be in a museum!  Many thanks for member support of
Quentin Smith and Chuck McGill.  About the only good thing to come out of the
night is that dingbat Jett reports the car sure runs FINE after having 3,
well 2 really, flatout runs plus the dose of 114 proof Union.  The winner,
Rob Jett, will cook his dad breakfast anyhow, but says he doesn't have to go
to church with him.  He should be reminded that he has two fathers, with but
one on earth!!

Subject: Old Chrysler AC retrofit


Any o-ring that you change must be compatible with PAG oil which is the oil
to use with R-134A. Use mineral oil or special AC o-ring lube only to
install. Your compressor might have some rubber in it that would not be
compatible with PAG/R-134A. Maybe there will be other input. Hoses should be
OK.

Your type of compressor will live longer on mineral oil. Check the sump per
your manual. Some reman compressors will come with a full system charge in
the compressor and this must be adjusted as mineral oil will not mix and
migrate properly with R-134A. PAG is put in the receiver/drier for system
lubrication which is your expansion valve and EPR valve. You do need to get
as much mineral oil out of your system as possible as the stuff will settle
and it takes up volume.

Refrigerant charge level will be about 80% of R-12 factory level. You will
see bubbles in the sight glass with R-134A. Full charging will send high
side pressures sky high.

There are flushing fluids available although I can supply no recommended
names. Straight compressed air is not acceptable (especially with R-134A;
can go boom).

R-134A systems use fittings of different size than R-12 and adaptors are
readily available.

With regards to IMHO, I do not do retrofitting; at least not yet. R-12 is
readily available. R-12 outperforms ANY other refrigerant ever used in a
mobile AC system. There were some retro kits available from the OE's for
some late model vehicles and these kits will most likely include increased
capacity  condensers and recalibrated expansion valves (or orifice tubes as
req'd) and even condenser booster fans. The people we work for want good
working AC and a retro system in any configuration will not satisfy me or
the people I work for. R-134A is attractive only because it is cheaper than
R-12. A PROPER retrofit  to R-134A will be more costly than fixing and
recharging an original R-12 system on R-12. When the industry runs out of
R-12, our shop will be prepared to retrofit as required because we are on
top of the latest developments. So far, R-12 is the best performing
refrigerant for mobile use. The most glaring fault apparent with R-12 is
that it is banned in Boston.

Mike; This is a deep subject with a lot of twists and turns and places where
you can make some serious judgmental errors. I spend a lot of time on the
phone with non customers on many subjects and would be willing to do so for
you. My son is the one that spends the most time with our internet group
concerning all matters of tech issues and he would be happy also to share
with you the knowledge and experience of many techs (and us as relates to
acceptable parts sources in AZ) that have been there and done that all
across the US.  The full picture is more than I want to spend the time
relating over the internet.

Here is my 2 cent's worth re : a/c  - R134 just does not cut the mustard as
far as I am concerned. I have yet to see a R134 system that blows ICE COLD
like an old R12 system !

For the past three years, I have been using FR12  . It is one of the many
R12 substitutes . It is a blend of three components - 59% R134a, 39.5%
R-124, and 1.5%R-600 . Pennzoil was the original distributor of this stuff
and it was the first R12 alternative approved by the EPA in 1995.   Because
it has the LEAST amount of R134a, it works better for R12 conversions . The
duct temp in my 300G is down to about 38 degrees ! as it should be...

Hi all:

I agree with John about FR-12.  I have used it in my 300F since 1996 and my
vent temperature is about the same as John's, 38 degrees.  Also, it is a lot
cheaper than R-12 which the last time I looked was about $30/lb. vs. $8/lb
for FR-12.  FR-12 is fully compatible with R-12 but it is illegal to mix the

        ive been following the ''bowtie v ram'' situation with a good
deal of interest and i sort of wish we lived a lot closer together as id
like to ask the young fellow who likes to run and beat ram cars if hed
like to try my 300-k on for size, heads up if he wants, just soon as its
the rest of the way together. the fit just might be a little bit
different than his dads car. i sure would like to try it and find out.
is there anyone out there who has a ram car and can cut better than a
13.6? we need to restore the prestige of the ram cars and open a big can
of whoop ass on that camaro.
         id be quite happy to, but its a really long drive from tucson,
and the car isnt quite ready yet. the car will have a mopar performance
timer on it so ill know ahead of time exactly what it does; wow,, are
those things ever accurate...
         come on fellows, club prestige is at stake here, theres got to
be somebody out there can beat that camaro..
