howdy;
yes; hemis were rated at 425 h/p, but that was at 4500 rpm, and
one was tested in about 68 by a "wilcap" co., and it had 423 ish, things
were different at 6500 though....... if memory serves, the wilcap test
had the h/p on that stocker at about 620ish at 6500+; but the insurancee
co's. liked the factorys rating better...

600 HP from the factory? Doubt it. Let me rephrase that - NO. Consider
the "race hemi" please: - more compression, better carburetion (780cfm
Holleys & cross-ram induction), more camshaft, and it was reported to have
about 550.
True, the 425 rating (which was taken at 5000 rpm BTW) was probably a bit
low, but I think even 475 would be pushing it. Note that NHRA "factored"
the street hemi to 500 HP, and even in "super stock trim", it took a while
before they could outrun the same-class 425 HP Max Wedge cars.
Don't get me wrong, these were great engines with great potential, but the
way they came from the factory in "street hemi" form, they were just
"de-tuned" racing engines, which are generally just a little bit faster
(and
sometimes slower) than "souped-up" dump truck/motor home engines (such as
the 440 6 pak) - which came *very* close in "from the factory" performance
-
with 390 HP, (which was OVER-rated!).

I ran a "dump truck /motor home engine" in a 3800# B-body in the early
eighties, it consistently ran the quarter mile in the low 12s with no real
fine tuning, almost no maintenance and no broken parts.
Over rated or not, it sure was a lot of fun and affordable.

btw, btw. if youll check out some more of the models and years,
for the 426 hemi, i think that youll find that not all were taken at
5000 or 5200, some were rated at 4500 rpm, least that is what my book
says and as were a couple of my cars. it isnt me, it was wilcap and the
article in hot rod that said 600+, you are quite welcome to decide to
disbelieve all you wish. i can tell you that as the past owner of 6
different hemi cars over a 20 year period, that they DID make QUITE a
lot more power in the 6000 and up area than they did at 4500 or 5000,
DRAMATICALLY MORE POWER !!!! if youve never owned a hemi then you just
dont understand what they did in 3 rd and 4th gear at full throttle, as
the r's climbed from 4500 to 6500[ish]; they felt like a freight train
coming on, and on and on, nothing like them that ive ever driven. it is
[was] something like the [really] big brother of the free boost that the
long rams give, as the r's go up and they come on.
